Coulomb Exercise-3: Solution

Two point charges, each with 0.1 C of charge, are 0.3m apart.
Question 1:
Show that the force between the charges is 1.0 109 N.

Solution 1:
q1 = 0.1 C; q2 = 0.1 C; d= 0.3m;
F = k (q1q2)/d2 = ((9 x 109N.m2/C2)×(0.1 C)×(0.1 C))/ (0.3m)2
= (0.09 × 109)/ 0.09 = 1 × 109 N

Question 2:
Solve for the force in the preceding problem when the charges are twice as far apart. Solution 1:
q1 = 0.1 C; q2 = 0.1 C; d= 2 × 0.3m = 0.6m;
F = k (q1q2)/d2 = ((9 x 109N.m2/C2)×(0.1 C)×(0.1 C))/ (0.6m)2
= (0.09 × 109)/ 0.36 = 25 × 107 N
