Schrödinger Equation
It is an equation that combines both wave and particle aspects/nature of the electrons.
Solutions of this equation are called wave functions (Ψ)where:
- Ψ = Describes the shape of the electronic orbitals (places where electrons live).
- (Ψ)2 = Gives the probability of finding the electronics (called the probability density).
Every dot represents a solution (Ψ) to Schrödinger equation (see figure below):
- These solutions (Ψ)define the placew where electrons live; called "orbitals".
- Each orbital has a characteristic energy and shape.
- Note:The place where electrons live according to Bohr's model and the modern model is described by:
- Orbital (in modern quantum mechanics)
- Orbit (in Bohr's model)
