Introduction to Vibration and Waves
Basically, anything that moves back and forth, side to side, or up and down is vibrating.
Examples of water waves and loudspeaker vibrations are illustrated below:
- A vibration is a periodic wiggle in time. Periodic means the pattern repeats itself with time.
- A wave is a periodic wiggle in both space (distance) and time, and
a wave is a moving vibration.
Another example of wave is light where an electromagnetic wave that needs no medium to travel.
We need to note the following:
- Vibration: wiggle in time
- Wave: wiggle in time and space (distance)
