Introduction to Vibration and Waves
Basically, anything that moves back and forth, side to side, or up and down is vibrating.
- A vibration is a periodic wiggle in time. Periodic means the pattern repeats itself with time.
- A wave is a periodic wiggle in both space (distance) and time, and
a wave is a moving vibration.
Examples of water waves and loudspeaker vibrations are illustrated below:
Another example of wave is light where an electromagnetic wave that needs no medium to travel.
We need to note the following:
- Vibration: wiggle in time
- Wave: wiggle in time and space (distance)
