Coulomb Exercise-2

Three positive charges are located along a line as shown below:
Question 1: What is the magnitude of the force exerted on the 0.04-C charge by the 0.20-C charge? And what is its direction?

Pick an answer:
  1. 1.2 × 106 N
  2. 2.3 × 106 N
  3. 3.9 × 106 N
  4. 4.5 × 106 N
  5. 1.8 × 106 N
Solution:
q1 = 0.04 C; q2 = 0.2 C; d= 4m;
F1 = k (q1q2)/d2 = ((9 x 109N.m2/C2)×(0.04 C)×(0.2 C))/ (4m)2
= (0.072 × 109)/ 16 = 4.5 × 106 N (to the right)

Question 2: What is the magnitude of the force exerted on the 0.04-C charge by the 0.06-C charge? And what is its direction?

q1 = 0.04 C; q2 = 0.06 C; d= 2m;

Pick an answer:
  1. 12.5 × 106 N
  2. 23.3 × 106 N
  3. 39.7 × 106 N
  4. 45.2 × 106 N
  5. 21.6 × 106 N

Solution:
F2= k(q1q2)/d2 = ((9 × 109N.m2/C2)×(0.04 C)×(0.06 C))/ (1m)2
= (0.0216× 109)/ 1 = 21.6 × 106 N (to the left)

Question 3: What is the net force? And what is its direction?

Solution:
The net force = F2 − F1 = (21.6 × 106 N) − (4.5 × 106 N) = 17.1 106 N (to the left)
