Introduction
The geometry of any particular ABnmolecule can be derived from any of the following five)basic geometric structures:
Question: Why do molecules prefer certain geometries but not others?
Answer:
- Valence electrons arranged around each atom, repel each other.
- Hence, a molecule adopts whichever 3D geometry to minimize this repulsion.
- This represents the basic principle of the: Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory
