Exercise on Finding Maximum Number of Electrons in an Atom Having Specific Quantum Numbers: Solutions
Question: What is the maximum number of electrons in an atom that can have the following quantum numbers?
- n=5, l=3
Solution:
For l=3, this is a f sub-shell with a designation 5f. For l=3, we have 7 values of ml, i.e., 7 orbitals with 2 electrons in each. Hence, we have 14 electrons in 5f
- n=4, l=1, ml=− 1
Solution:
For l=1, this is a p sub-shell with a designation 4p. For l=1, and ml = − 1, we are having one orbital ONLY that contains 2 electrons. Hence, we have 2 electrons in 4p.
