Exercise on the Number of Atoms: Solutions

Exercise 1:
The diameter of a US penny is 19 mm. The diameter of a sliver atom is only 2.88 Å
Question: How many silver atoms could be arranged side by side in a straight line across the diameter of a penny?

Solution:
Note that 1 Å = 10− 10 m, and silver atom is denoted by Ag.
Number of Ag atomes = Diameter of a penny / Diameter of a Ag atom = (19 × 10 − 3 × 10 10 Å) / 2.88 Å
Number of Ag atomes = 6.5 × 106 atoms.
