Exercise II on Finding Total Pressure: Solutions Tips

Assume a 38 liter gas vessel at 35°C contains oxygen at a pressure of 4.5 atmosphere. If all the gas is transferred to a second vessel having a volume of 55 liters, at the same temperature.

Questions:
  1. What would be the pressure of oxygen gas in the second vessel?
  2. How many grams of oxygen were there?
Solution Tips:
In this case, the same amount (n1 = n2) of gas is moved between 2 conditions at the same temperature.
→ P1V1 = P2V2

To calculate the amount in grams, we need to get the # moles (n) using the ideal gas law in the first container,
then use the molar mass of O2 to convert it to grams.
