Question 1: What is the designation for the subshell with n = 5 and l = 3?
Solution:
- n = 5 means the shell number
- l = 3 means the f sub-shell
Hence the designation for the subshell is 5f
Question 2: How many orbitals are in this subshell?
Solution:
Since l = 3, therefore, # orbitals = (2l + 1) = 7 orbitals
Question 3: Indicate the values of ml for each of these orbitals.
Solution:
Since # orbitals = 7 therefore, their ml values (indicated by +l, 0, − l ) are +3, +2, +1, 0, − 1, − 2, − 3
Question 4: How are these shells, sub-shells and orbitals arranged in an atom?
