Exercise on Acid-Base Reactions with Gas Formation: Solutions

Question: Acid-base reactions with gas formation (Molecular Equation & Net Ionic Equation):

HCl(aq) + NaHCO3(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2CO3(aq) (Molecular Equation)

Carbonic acid ( H2CO3) is unstable and decomposes to form CO2 gas and water according to:

H2CO3(aq) → CO2(g) + H2O(l)

The net ionic equation can be obtained as follows:

2H+(aq) + Cl(aq) + Na+(aq) + H2CO3(aq) → H2O(l) + Cl(aq) + Na+(aq) + CO2(g)

2H+(aq) + H2CO3(aq) → H2O(l) + CO2(g) (Net Ionic Equation)
